A Dr. Suess Creation

Horton Hears a Who! was originally a children's book by Theodor Seuss Geisel, also famously known as Dr. Suess. It was published in 1954 as a purpose for the author to end his bitterness towards Japan. He wrote this book as an allegory for the post-World War II, stating "a person's a person no matter how small." This book was made into an CGI-animated (it is the first Dr. Suess adaption to be one) movie in 2008 by Blue Sky Studios, the same creators of Ice Age.

The story takes place in the Jungle of Nool on the fifteenth of May. One day, Horton, a caring elephant, hears a cry from a speck of dust floating in the air. Horton successfully places the speck onto a pink clover. As it turns out, the speck of dust is actually the home to the Whos, living in the town called Whoville. Horton comes in contact with the Mayor of Whoville and promises him that he will bring their world in a safe and stable place with no disturbance. However, trouble looms when the Kangaroo, the animal who seems to be in charge of the whole jungle, does not believe his story and thinks he is dangerous to the children of the Jungle. She now seeks out to destroy the clover for that is her way of saving the children the "menacing" Horton and his clover.

Horton must now try to make it to Mt. Nool, the safest place in the jungle, in addition of trying to get all of his friends from the jungle to believe that there is life on that tiny speck.

Meet Katie, the baby yak

She's a cute, fluffy yellow yak. Nothing wrong with that, right? Well, that's where you are wrong! Because Katie isn't only adorable, but she's also a little strange. Yes. Random and awkward. But it's okay, Katie does not mean any harm. It's not like she's trying to creep you out on purpose. At least, I don't think she's trying to do it on purpose...

This is Katie's dad. Or mom. Well, at least you can tell this is one of Katie's parents. He's a yak and yellow, just like Katie. Except we have no idea if he carries the same strange habits as Katie. Well, I'm pretty sure he doesn't. Because whatever he does, he does not appear as strange and special as Katie. However, we do not know how the other parent looks like... the mystery continues.

Katie serves as one of Horton's students due to the fact that Horton is the jungle's nature teacher. She is often carried by Tommy, one of her classmates. She has some unexplained, strange habits. It's probably better to stay that way. She does not get to talk much in the movie, but the one time we get to hear her speak is the scene where Horton's students come up to him claiming that they also have worlds on top of their clovers. Overall, Katie is creative, cheerful, and awkward. She may have a great imagination, but she may not be too bright since she had trouble going over the log in one of the scenes...

Strange Habits and Abilities

Katie is suppose to be a yak. A small baby yak that should stay on land and eat grass. But not Katie. She's that special.

  • She captures her prey like a frog. Meaning, she has the long/stretchable lightning-fast styled tongue. Not like a yak, at all.
  • In the end of the movie, she floats in the air. All she did was say "Ahh..." and she started to go up like a balloon. Well, that isn't at all creepy.
  • The strangest of all, she may look cute and fluffy, but when she opens her mouth, her outer appearance changes dramatically. But it's still adorable. Just in an awkward way.

Katie doesn't talk much. Most of the time, all you hear her say is "Ahhh..." as her response. And you can tell Horton finds her a bit strange, if you ever notice his reactions.

Horton: Katie, you there?
Katie drops down from the tree and onto Horton's back.
Katie: Aahhh...
Horton: Ohh-kaaaay...

See, she doesn't talk much. However, we do get to hear her talk at least once in the movie. And this is the greatest moment of them all from the whole movie.

Katie: In my world, everyone's a pony, and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflies!
Horton: (with a worrisome expression) That's beautiful, Katie...
Katie puts the flowers on her head and stands on her two hind legs.
Katie: Aahhh... (disappears in the bushes)
Horton: ...in a really weird way.

As you can see, Horton finds her uncomfortable sometimes. But the other animals and children doesn't seem to mind her. So it's all good.

Her Role Purpose

Katie doesn't do much in the movie besides standing there and acting strange. Katie only shows up in a total of four scenes and each and every one of those scenes, she is found to do something abnormally. Abnormal as in not acting as a yak. Why would a yak have those type of abilities?! Seriously, I think Katie is part yak, part frog, and part Kirby.

Katie obviously has an imaginative mind. I mean, who else could think up of ponies eating rainbows and excreting butterflies? Unlike her classmate who thought about creating a world about everyone worshipping this Queen Jessica in some world called Land Jessica. Psshh, anyone can come up with that. For real.
